Brockhurst was founded in 1884 as a boys’ boarding prep school at Church Stretton in Shropshire. In its early years it had strong connections to the Royal Navy and on its honours boards can be found the names of some of the most illustrious naval families in British history whose sons were educated at the school.
In more recent years, former pupils have gone on to the highest echelons and all walks of public and private life. All have been influenced by the education they received here and many have recorded that their prep school years ranked among their happiest memories. We are a school which enjoys and fosters individuality.
The school moved to Marlston in 1945 and now occupies the former home of the Palmer family. The school offers a flourishing mix of full and flexi boarding as well as day places. It has no particular allegiance to any one senior Independent school and boys go on to many of the leading Independent schools in the area. The school has a fine academic record and we regard this as one of our core strengths.
The glorious Mansion includes an estate of 500 acres in the heart of the Pang Valley in Bucklebury. Brockhurst is a genuine country prep school and sport, outdoor pursuits, field sports and camps and scrambling about in trees are all an important part of the boys’ education.
An impressive programme of building works has been completed in recent years giving pupils some of the best facilities in the sector. Most recently, the new specialist West Berkshire Learning Development Centre opened in 2011 in the heart of the school. It is intended that it will create a regional centre of excellence for the specialist teaching of children of all abilities. It is also the most recent manifestation of our determination to continually improve the education we offer.
