Every pupil was required to select and learn by heart a poem during the first half of the term. The best in each class went forward to the semifinals and the best boys and girls in the year group then declaimed their poems in front of the whole school.
Junior winner: I.Clifford "I opened the book" by Julia Donaldson;
Intermediate winner A.Brown "The Word Party" by Richard Edwards
Senior Winner: L.Ryan "If" by Rudyard Kipling
Summing up, Mr Bartholomew said that he was hugely impressed by the quality and the eclectic mix of poems chosen. In each age group he said that the selection of a winner had been extremely difficult as the standard was exceptionally high.
