Nursery and Reception

In the Early Years of Nursery and Reception, we provide a playful, happy experience for our children. We want our children to develop important life skills such as: confidence, curiosity, creativity, persistence, independence, imagination and resourcefulness.

The Nursery children occupy two large classrooms, one of which is specifically designed for messy play.  Children have use of the garden and the outdoor learning equipment provides the children with a physical challenge. There are also imaginative opportunities for investigation and exploration. Nursery and Reception children also make full use of the school grounds and the field; playground, pond and farm offer numerous opportunities for learning.

Every child in Nursery and Reception feels valued, secure and is appropriately challenged by our supportive team of highly qualified and experienced staff. The small class sizes ensure that every child is nurtured, receives individual attention and experiences a happy introduction to life at Brockhurst and Marlston House Schools. Staff work closely with parents ensuring that every child has the opportunity to meet their potential.

The curriculum is designed to include the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) whilst extending each pupil according to their own pace of learning and individual development.

We strongly believe in the importance of grasping learning opportunities wherever they arise. Children learn through interactive experiences and are given many opportunities to work on exciting topics, often instigated by them.  Our environment is highly organised to promote informed choice, creativity and independence, with the outdoor environment being equally as important as the classroom.

In Nursery, children start to learn to read through activities such as: sequencing, jigsaws, threading, memory and matching games. They will start to recognise familiar letters, listen to and enjoy stories and learn rhymes and songs by heart. The children begin their early phonic development with a new letter sound introduced each week.  Reception children take reading books home and daily phonics lessons, songs and games help to ensure that letter sounds are firmly reinforced.

Nursery and Reception children also benefit from specialist swimming, PE and Music lessons. Other popular activities include ballet, “Welly Wednesdays” where the children explore the grounds, set up camp, toast marshmallows on a camp fire and drink hot chocolate.

With countless opportunities for imaginative play, physical challenge and exploration, our children thrive. When you visit our Nursery and Reception, you will find the children to be focused, stimulated and above all, happy.
