The Good Schools Guide

Year 1 (Form 8)

The children arrive in Form 8 excited and ready to learn after a fantastic start to their educational journey in the Early Years. As children move from the Foundation Stage into Year One, the days get a little more formal but by no means less fun.  Individual learning styles are fostered and independence encouraged as children embrace a challenging and creative curriculum.  Every child is uniquely gifted and we promote curiosity, compassion, high expectations, individual and team excellence, respect for others, personal initiative and resilience.

Our children have always been commended on their good manners and mature social skills. These soft skills are valued as highly as the academic side of school and children are rewarded daily through star charts and in our weekly Celebration Assemblies for being considerate and kind.  There is a real sense of belonging and the children are very proud of their school. We work hard to ensure that the nurturing, positive and friendly environment allows all of our pupils to flourish under the guidance of their class teachers.

Curriculum

Our curriculum is designed to create a love of learning and you will always find our classrooms buzzing with purposeful activity. We focus on the varying needs of individual children, ensuring that all are appropriately challenged and supported to achieve their very best.

We teach the core subjects of English, Maths, Science and the Humanities alongside a plethora of specialist subjects, including Music, Physical Education, French, Art, Drama and ICT.  These are taught by our specialist teachers from the senior school. Alongside our busy day, there are optional extra activities such as:  Judo, Ballet, Ball Skills, Chess and Music lessons. There is something for everyone.

We use a new mathematics scheme, which is designed to instil confidence and a love of maths. Numeracy is taught in a visual, practical, hands on manner which is fun and inspiring. Regular assessments track the understanding of key concepts of every pupil, ensuring that they are appropriately challenged and supported throughout the year. We pride ourselves in producing excellent writers and readers. Stories are brought to life through drama and real life experiences. Children are self-assured and confident to put their ideas forward and have a go. Our detailed phonics and handwriting programmes provide the children with the necessary tools to get their ideas down in a way that they can be proud of.

We have such a rich learning environment and children can often be found hopping into our mini buses and travelling around our local area, for example, to a castle ruin to support our learning on castles or to the canal to enrich our learning about canal boats. Science learning rarely happens in the classroom and we can often be found experiencing the signs of Spring in the school grounds or pond dipping at the Discovery Centre.  Producing happy and confident children, who are proud of themselves and achieving their best, is our target for the end of Form 8.
